Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) hosted a three-day training workshop at CUT Bloemfontein Campus on 24 June 2016 for training of members of public who will be officiating during the upcoming local government elections on 3 August 2016. The training was to ensure that the trainees understood what would be expected of them during these elections.

For some time, CUT has been among a few universities working with IEC to make use of its professional expertise in building confidence and credibility of the SRC Elections. This partnership is premised on IEC’s vision to work with Institutions of Higher Learning in order to deepen the electoral democracy and civic education programmes.
The IEC trainees were also provided information on study opportunities and existing bursary programmes at CUT. They were encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities and pass on information to their family members. Currently, CUT offers Higher Certificate in Community Development Work for government officials and members of public to improve their qualifications so that they are able to contribute meaningfully to their communities.
