10th October is the International World Mental Health Day. Celebrated annually since 1992 – with the objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world, the day provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide.

In preparation for this, CUT FM held an interview on 13 September 2017 with psychiatric professionals, Dr. Colin Finucane, Therapist and Pastor, Ms. Mmathapelo Letsholo, Social Worker and Mr. Deon Labuschagne about the “crazy walk” initiative. The interview served as a platform to educate listeners about the most frequent conditions treated, which included mood and anxiety disorders such as depression, bipolar disorders and post-traumatic stress disorders.
The “crazy” walkers slipped into their sneakers and started the 1500 km walk on 4 September 2017 from Pretoria to Cape Town. The aim is to reach Cape Town on 10 October 2017, just in time to celebrate International World Mental Health Day.
The initiative is a launch by Vista Clinic, a private psychiatric hospital that provides mental health services to people from 16 years of age and older. The most frequent conditions treated, are mood and anxiety disorders such as depression, bipolar disorders and post-traumatic stress disorders. For the past 30 years, Vista has strived to help heal the person who matters most.
